Healthy Diet for June 17 – Rate Your Plate ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

Wonder how your food choices rate? You could keep a food diary, then tally food-group servings, nutrients, and calories. That works, but there’s an easier way—online.

The Interactive Healthy Eating Index (IHEI) from the U.S. Department of Agriculture does the calculating for you. Just enter what you ate for a day on its Web site. The nutrition calculator figures how your day’s food choices match food-group recommendations, nutrient advice, or both for your age and gender. That includes calories, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients and food substances, including those you may need to control: fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

Use the IHEI to quickly check your day’s food choices or to follow the progress of your “eat smart” plan.

  • Click here: www.usda.gov/cnpp for the IHEI.
  • Measure. That’s the key to any accurate nutrition feedback from computer analysis or written records. Get out the measuring cups and spoons if you need to.
  • Remember to include condiments and drinks. They can supply hidden calories.
