Do you like pizza, spaghetti with tomato sauce, burritos laden with salsa, lots of catsup, or old-fashioned tomato soup? Then enjoy ’em! Tomatoes are an abundant source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that may help reduce prostate cancer risk. Aside from skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United States, and the second leading cause of men’s cancer death.
Two other antioxidants—selenium in fish, seafood, poultry, whole grains, and soybeans; and vitamin E in nuts—also may reduce prostate cancer risk. Some studies suggest protective substances in soybeans. Try soy beverages, soy nuts, soy flour, tofu, tempeh; soy’s not just for women!
The general cancer prevention guidelines: smart eating (variety of plant-based foods including fruits and vegetables, low-fat eating), healthy weight, active living, not smoking.
Men: Pay attention to prostate health, starting this weekend.
- Enjoy more tomatoes and soy foods.
- Eat lean: lean meats, plenty of whole-grain foods, fruits, and veggies, easy on fat.
- Schedule a prostate cancer screening—every year if you’re 50 or older, sooner if you’re African American or have a family history of prostate cancer.
