I scream, we scream—do you scream for ice cream? Ninety percent of United States households buy ice cream, and we average about five gallons per person yearly.
But which ice cream? Premium has richer flavor, yet more fat and calories. Choose reduced-fat, low-fat, light, or fat-free if you’re cutting back on fat; lactose-free, if you’re lactose intolerant; or calcium-rich, for more calcium.
Smart alternatives are frozen yogurt (whole, low-fat, or fat-free), with or without live, active cultures, and fruit sorbet or soy frozen dessert if you’re a strict vegetarian.
Celebrate July, Ice Cream Month, with a great sundae.
- Enjoy a sensible-size sundae. Find the calories in a serving (usually 1/2 cup) on a frozen dessert label. Is your portion larger than a serving? Surprised?
- Make it fruit-full. Spoon ice cream between layers of mango, papaya, blueberries, kiwi, or figs.
- Go nuts. A small handful of pistachios, pine nuts, hazelnuts, or almonds sprinkled on top will bump up the phytonutrient benefits.
