Healthy Diet for August 5 – Food, Flavor, Fusion! ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

Feel artistic? Enjoy blending paints, musical notes, or words to express something new? Turn your creative genius toward the kitchen. Blend foods and flavors for more variety, new taste sensations, perhaps more nutrition.

“Fusion cuisine”— blending ingredients or cooking techniques of different cultures—is a culinary phenomenon. Though trendy, it’s not new. Over time, every cuisine has been influenced by others to ultimately create its own ethnic distinction. Consider: Tomatoes that originated in the Americas transformed southern Italian cuisine over the past 500 years.

Create fusion dishes and give vegetables, fruits, and grain products a flavor boost.

  • Thai-Italian: pizza crust coated with hoisin sauce, topped with sprouts, green onions, shredded carrots, cilantro, ginger, peanuts, and mild white cheese
  • Italian-Asian: cooked pasta tossed with grilled chicken and Asian peanut sauce
  • French-Caribbean: chocolate mousse topped with tropical fruit salsa
  • Italian-Southwest: chili con carne, flavored with basil, topped with Parmesan cheese
  • Asian-American: mashed sweet potatoes flavored with wasabi, or pumpkin soup flavored with curry powder
  • Mexican-Chinese: Chinese stir-fry, wrapped in a warm flour tortilla
