Need to trim a few pounds, or avoid gaining anymore? Try these tricks of the savvy weight trade:
- Serve on a salad plate. Less looks like more.
- Start low. Eat salads, vegetables, and other lower-calorie foods first. Smaller portions of higher-calorie foods follow.
- Pick foods you chew. Eat fruit, instead of juice. Fiber is filling.
- Sup on soup. Add extra veggies to clear or noncreamy soups to make them heartier.
- Switch from whole to 1% low-fat milk. Save 50 calories daily per 8-ounce cup.
- Cut down on caloric drinks—soda, lemonade, sugary tea, fruit drinks. One less 20-ounce soda saves about 270 calories daily, or 98,550 calories per year!
- Skip mayo. Flavor with mustard.
- Limit alcoholic drinks. Have no more than one a day, or weekends only. Alcohol is not calorie-free.
- See your food. Eat from a plate, not the package. Then you know how much you really eat.
- Eat only when you’re hungry.
- Eat until you’re nearly full. Savor how good you feel to be satisfied, not stuffed.
