Healthy Diet for September 21 – Looks Like Water, Sold Like Water ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

But . . .

Remember when tap water was the only water? Now marketers tout health benefits of another so-called option: waters enhanced with vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Are they any better for you? Despite claims, probably not.

First, the calories: Added sugars flavor many enhanced waters, and the calories add up. Second, the add-ins: Do you really need their vitamins or minerals? Not if you’re already getting enough from food and a daily supplement. And herbal add-ins are full of unknowns: unknown effectiveness; unknown interactions with food, medicine, supplements; unknown safe dosages.

Enjoy the fresh, pure flavor of icy-cold plain water—as refreshing as it gets! If you like flavor:

  • Flavor any water, still or sparkling. Add a slice of citrus fruit, or a fresh sprig of herb, perhaps mint. Or add your own fruit-juice ice cubes.
  • Buy calorie-free flavored seltzer.
