Laughter not only diffuses negative emotions and stress. It may also change your body’s chemistry—so you really may laugh your troubles away.
The reasons are not yet understood. However, laughter may reduce stress hormones—epinephrine and cortisol—which tend to impair the protective lining of blood vessels. Without that protection, the chance of cholesterol buildup and heart disease is higher. A few good laughs releases muscle tension and endorphins. And they may also boost immunity with more production of infection-fighting anti-bodies, help protect against cancer, and may increase tolerance to pain. And with a smile, you look younger and feel better, too.
Find something to prompt laughter in your life today.
- Keep humor in view. At your workplace, hang a cartoon, photo, or quote that makes you giggle.
- Rent a funny movie; watch your favorite sitcom.
- Learn to laugh at yourself. You’ll give others permission to laugh with you.
