Healthy Diet for October 21 – Keeping Regular ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

Though not brought up in “polite” conversation, regular elimination signals your good health—now and later. Regular differs from person to person. For most folks, one or two soft, bulky stools daily is normal.

It’s not surprising that health risks rise when elimination isn’t normal. The chances for hemorrhoids and diverticulosis go up as hard stools put pressure on the colon and the rectum. Colon cancer risk may rise, too, since food waste (with potentially harmful substances) that moves too slowly through your intestines has more time to contact intestinal walls.

To keep regular, take stock of your everyday habits.

  • Drink enough. Dehydration contributes to hard, dry stools.
  • Listen to your body’s signals. Delaying can lead to constipation.
  • Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods. Fiber helps soften and bulk up waste so it passes through your intestines with ease and normal frequency. (See August 3.)
  • Stay physically active. Active living helps keep muscle tone throughout your whole body—your intestinal tract, too.
  • If these habits still don’t work? Talk to your doctor.
