Healthy Diet for November 16 – Party or Not – Drink Responsibly ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

Do you enjoy a celebration drink during the holiday season? Remember the year-round guideline for moderation: no more than one drink daily for women, two for men. The key to moderation is knowing alcohol equivalency. One standard drink (12 ounces beer, or 5 ounces wine, or 1/2 ounces 80-proof distilled spirits) has about 14 grams of alcohol.

If you drink alcoholic beverages—or someone you socialize with does—these tips promote responsible drinking:

  • Eat first. That slows alcohol absorption.
  • Set your limit from the start. Stick to it.
  • Make the first drink nonalcoholic—perhaps a “virgin” cocktail (nonalcoholic mixers) to quench your thirst.
  • Ask for ice. It ups the volume and dilutes the drink.
  • Set down your drink. You’ll talk more and sip less.
  • Drink water, still or sparkling, when you’re thirsty. Alcoholic beverages are dehydrating.
  • Alternate. Have a nonalcoholic drink after one with alcohol. Give your body the hour it needs to detoxify a standard-size drink.
  • Never drink if it puts you or others at risk!
