Healthy Diet for December 3 – Eat, Think, and Be Merry ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

Throwing a holiday party? If you plan to serve alcoholic drinks, host responsibly. Plan ahead so a cocktail, beer, or glass of wine can be part of the festivities—without putting a damper on your guests’ fun and personal safety.

For the record, a healthy body can detoxify about one drink per hour; drinking coffee won’t speed the process. What counts as a drink? A 12-ounce beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, a 1 V2-ounce jigger of distilled spirits (bourbon, whiskey, rum). They all have roughly the same amount of alcohol, V2 ounce pure ethanol.

When you host a party now—or any time—with alcoholic drinks:

  • Downsize drinks. “Supersizing” encourages excessive drinking. Use a 1-ounce, not a 1/2-ounce, jigger.
  • Pair drinks with food. Their flavors can complement each other. What’s more, eating slows alcohol absorption.
  • Offer nonalcoholic options. Serve no-alcohol wine or beer, sparkling water, or a festive punch, giving choices for everyone.
  • Ensure a safe way home. Plan for designated drivers. Or be prepared to call a taxi.
