Habituation

Habituation

Habituation is a decrement in response to repeated stimuli. It is a learning mechanism through which organisms are able to filter sensory inputs from their environment and thereby allocate scarce attentional resources to only the most relevant stimuli (Siddle 1991). Habituation involves both peripheral and central nervous system processes. In the peripheral nervous system, the

Any unconditioned response that is elicited in response to an unconditioned stimulus will show habituation if the stimulus is repeated. That is, measures of the response will show orderly decreases in magnitude as the stimulus is repeatedly applied. Habituation can be seen in the withdrawal responses of protozoa to tactile stimulation, in the freezing-defensive responses
