Healthy Diet for April 16 – Catch the Volunteer Spirit ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

Do you take time to volunteer? As a lifelong habit, volunteering your time and effort may be worth even more than you think.

In one study, just 40 hours of volunteer time yearly for retired people tended to prolong life. In another, volunteers tended to be happier, more energetic, and in better control of their lives than nonvolunteers. Giving of yourself—no matter what your age—pays off in the positive mental energy that goes with giving.

As National Volunteer Week approaches, consider volunteering in a service, perhaps one that relates to food.

  • A community soup kitchen or food pantry, which provides food for the needy
  • Your child’s or grandchild’s school cafeteria or after-school program, where adult volunteers can help encourage healthful eating
  • A senior center, where you take time to enjoy a meal with an older adult
  • A cause walk, where you walk to raise funds for a cause, perhaps for a food pantry or the cause of your choice
