According to tradition, Saint Nicholas was the first to fill stockings— with gold coins to ensure happy marriages for three noble sisters who lost their mother. Today food and trinkets turn empty stockings into festive gift bags. Rather than the usual candy canes, chocolates, and small toys, why not stuff children’s socks with health-focused goodies? Fill stockings for those great girls and boys—adults, too—with:
- Fresh fruit: tangerines, oranges, apples, or pears
- Dried fruit and nuts: little packets of dried cranberries, blueberries, cherries, or raisins; almonds, pistachios, pecans, walnuts, or sunflower seeds
- Kitchen stuff: child’s apron, measuring spoons, mini baking pans, potholders, or child’s cookbook
- Action stuff: jump rope, Smurf ball, sweatband, fun gym socks, or a single-use camera (Let kids capture family memories.)
