Dates add a flavorful complement to romantic dinners for two. Enjoy this peak season for this nutritious and sweetest of fruits.

Seventy-percent sugar by weight, dates have a candy-like sweetness. Unlike other fruits, dates have essentially no vitamin C. Yet even five or six dates deliver fiber and potassium, and no fat.

Sweeten your cooking with dates.

  • Slivered and tossed in salads—with Bibb lettuce or baby spinach, mandarin oranges, and toasted pecans
  • Chopped and mixed in pilaf, couscous, curries, or stir-fries—in fact, in any recipe that calls for raisins

• In desserts—for an easy parfait, layer pineapple, raspberries, yogurt, banana, and dates; top with almonds. Add chopped dates to cookie, brownie, or quick bread dough.
