Healthy Diet for February 13 – Kissable? ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

Is your breath fresh enough for tomorrow’s Valentine’s Day kiss?

Odors from foods such as onions and garlic are absorbed into the bloodstream, transferred to the lungs, and exhaled. Until they’re digested and eliminated, they may cause bad breath. For dieters, infrequent eating may cause it, too. Other causes? Poor dental hygiene, tobacco residue, or a dry mouth.

If you struggle with bad breath:

  • Brush well (twice daily); floss well (daily).
  • Brush your tongue, too. Or get an even more efficient tongue cleaner at your local pharmacy.
  • Ease up on onions and garlic.
  • Nibble the garnish; chew the seeds! Parsley, mint, anise, and dill or fennel seeds freshen your breath naturally.
  • Drink more, especially if your mouth is dry. More saliva flow helps oral bacteria wash away.
  • Use a mouthwash as a quick fix. The effect doesn’t last long. And remember, sucking sugary mint candies promotes tooth decay.
  • Stop smoking. Being more kissable is another good reason to quit!

If bad breath persists, check with your dentist or physician—it may signal a more serious health problem.
