Want homemade flavor in fast-food time? “Speed-scratch” cooking may be your answer. Just toss together one or two fresh foods with a couple of packaged products that may be already cut up, cooked, or mixed with other flavorful, nutritious ingredients.

Spawned by consumer research, all kinds of high-flavor, nutrient-rich speed-scratch products have been launched. In the 1980s consumers looked for everyday recipes with 10 to 20 ingredients, to prepare in 45 minutes or less. Today, it’s often three to five ingredients, prepared in 15 minutes or less.

  • Pocket salad: mixed greens (bag), roasted red peppers (jar), marinated artichoke hearts (can), stuffed in a pita pocket.

Grilled chicken with corn salsa: grilled chicken breast, topped with a combination of green or red salsa (jar), Mexican-style corn with chilies (can), and fresh cilantro

  • Pork stir-fry: precut pork cubes (refrigerated or frozen) cooked and stirred with stir-fry veggies (frozen) and teriyaki sauce (bottle), served over rice
