If you “take out to eat in,” your doggie bag or take-out meal poses a potential food safety risk. As the weather heats up, the risk soars higher. To avoid the guessing game of doggie bag safety, follow this advice:
- Chill promptly. For take-out food and restaurant leftovers, that means within two hours. If the outdoor temperature swells to 90°F or more, store food within an hour.
- Date it. Label your doggie bag or take-out package. Eat what’s inside within three to four days. Remember, spoiled food may not look, smell, or taste bad.
- Reheat thoroughly. Use a meat thermometer to check. The safe reheating temperature for restaurant or any leftovers is 165°F.
