Remember the Boy Scout motto? Be prepared! That’s good advice for your pantry—in case a storm or an accident shuts off power.
If your power does go out, keep your refrigerator and freezer closed. Your refrigerator will stay cold for at least four to six hours; your freezer, about two days if it’s full.
Before summer storm season hits, plan for unexpected emergencies.
- Keep a three-day supply. Get foods that keep in the cabinet: dry foods (nuts, trail mix, cereal, peanut butter); canned foods; foods in plastic bottles (jars can break); single-serve foods (you can’t refrigerate leftovers); formula for babies; pet food. Keep needed medication, too. Remember a manual can opener.
- Stock water. Store enough for three days: 1 gallon per person per day. Buy bottled water in plastic containers. Or store your own in clean food-quality containers such as 2-liter soda bottles (not milk jugs). Unless your water comes from a well or untreated water supply, tap water doesn’t need extra treatment.
- Rotate your pantry. If you’ve stocked up already, keep it fresh. Rotate every year or so.
