Think you need to give up flavor for nutrition, or that healthful foods just don’t taste as good? An astounding number of people do. And they give up on smart eating as a result. Fact is, good taste and good nutrition can go together!

For the best flavor, start with quality ingredients at their peak. Store them properly; use them while they’re still fresh and safe to eat. Avoid overcooking. And serve foods at their right temperature: milk and salads cold, hot meals hot.

Today, kick up the flavor in nutrient-rich foods.

  • Juice the rice. Instead of water, cook rice in tomato juice or broth.
  • Grill or roast your veggies to give a sweet, smoky flavor.
  • Add spark with sharp cheese. Try just a little feta, blue, Parmesan, or sharp Cheddar on salads or vegetables.
  • Concentrate the stock. Simmering to reduce the juices from cooking meat, poultry, and fish makes a nice glaze—and flavorful alternative to gravy.
