The average American consumed about 340 more calories a day in the late 1990s than in the mid-1980s, and at least 500 more calories daily since the 1950s. At the same time, Americans are less physically active. How about you?
How much food energy (calories) is enough, but not too much? Among other things, the right amount for you depends on your age, gender, and how much you move. To lose a pound, you need to consume 3,500 calories less than you consume. Do that by consuming less, moving more, or both. Here’s daily calorie advice for the “average adult.”
Women
If you’re sedentary, like most people 1,600 calories
If you’re physically active 2,200 calories
Men
If you’re sedentary, like most people 2,200 calories
If you’re physically active 2,800 calories
Take a few minutes today for a reality check. Count your calories.
- From food labels: Jot down the amount in your portions. Are they bigger than a label serving? Be honest with yourself. Remember snacks and drinks.
- Ask for calorie info in restaurants. Many fast-food places have it.
- Buy a pocket calorie counter. Or check calories in food online at www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp.
- Add them up. Surprised?
