Healthy Diet for May 24 – Why Diets Don’t Stick ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

Did dieting ever do you in? Truth is, most “diets” don’t work—at least not for long. Too soon, you’ve cheated. You’re off your diet, even gained back what you lost, and then some. Why does dieting so often fail?

  • Giving up too much. It’s hard to resist a “forbidden” food. Restricting calories so much that you feel hungry is a recipe for failure.
  • Missing out on motion. You lose weight easier and keep it off better if you move more, too.
  • Overlooking the big picture. Quick fixes rarely focus on the only real solution: lifestyle changes.

Rethink your notion of dieting today, unless guided by your health care professional.

  • Get real. Set a realistic goal, matched to your lifestyle. Write it down.
  • Plan to go slowly. Losing a half to one pound weekly is healthy and more sustainable.
  • Ease stress. Too much stress often leads to emotional overeating and cheating.
  • Fit it in. Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods with fewer total calories than you’d normally eat. Just follow healthful eating advice. That might mean smaller portions. And fit in more motion!
