More energy, less stress: we all want it, but what really works and what doesn’t?
First, what doesn’t. Supplements might purport to help you cope with stress or boost your energy. But emotional stress doesn’t increase nutrient needs. And vitamin pills won’t cause your body cells to produce extra energy or more brain power. Only smart eating does that.
So-called energy drinks often “power-up” their marketing with carbs, high caffeine, even ephedrine as the ingredient behind the claims. Yet high-carb drinks or energy bars won’t fuel body cells right away. Caffeine only gives a short-term energy boost. And the stimulant ephedrine can be dangerous (it’s been linked to having a heart attack, a stroke, tremors, even death).
Now what does work: consistently eating a variety of foods; drinking enough fluids (dehydration causes fatigue); being regularly physically active (stamina booster); learning to relieve stress and to sleep enough.
Boost your energy today effectively.
- Drink enough fluids: about 8 cups a day, more if you perspire a lot.
- Eat regular meals with a variety of foods. Meal skipping causes energy dips.
- Take time to be more active. Make it an ongoing habit.
