Healthy Diet for November 20 – How to Be a Thoughtful Host ⋆ Healthy Diet ⋆ Lifestyle

Hosting a party or overnight guests? Whether or not you know it, some may need to restrict their food choices—for example, people with diabetes or food allergies, vegetarians, or those with religious restrictions. As you plan food for a special occasion, make guests your top priority.

To set a great and flavorful table, keep in mind:

  • When you invite, ask. Are there foods your guests can’t eat? And is timing (perhaps for people with diabetes) an issue?
  • Plan with something for everyone. Try a vegetable casserole for a vegetarian, or grilled or broiled meat (no heavy sauces) if a guest has diabetes.
  • Invite guests to bring a dish. That’s at least one dish they can enjoy.
  • Ask guests to help with food prep. Then they can prepare food to match their needs. Serve family style; let guests control their portions.
  • Stick with the meal schedule, if you can. That’s good hosting, and especially important if any guests have diabetes.
  • Skip any bad feelings. If your “star” dish goes untouched, that’s okay. You can still enjoy it, and the leftovers later!
