Did summer leisure relax your resolve to eat smart? If so, now’s a great time to get back on track, with an eat-smart strategy to try: food trade-offs.
Trading off means thinking about all your food choices for a day, then substituting. For a food with more fat, sugar, salt, or calories, trade in a similar food with less. Or limit more indulgent foods; spend the savings elsewhere. The idea is to moderate and balance, not eliminate.
Try these food trade-offs, or come up with your own:
- For calories: Eat a half (not a whole) brownie at lunch. Spend some calorie savings on a small fruit smoothie later. Strategy: Limit portion size.
- For fat: Eat a salsa-topped baked potato instead of fries. Spend some fat savings on a cheese-and-cracker snack later. Strategy: Substitute another food later.
- For fat: Choose grilled chicken breast instead of breaded chicken nuggets. Strategy: Substitute a healthier version.
- For sugar: Drink one soda today, not two. Spend some sugar savings on an oatmeal cookie. Strategy: Limit how often.
